Three-year-old Auguste Majkowski from Montreal underwent a groundbreaking surgery, the first child accepted into a U.S. surgical study to implant a hearing device into his brain stem in May. Seven weeks later, the surgeons activated the device. Auguste now sometimes turns his head when his mother calls his name. His mother Sophie Gareau talks about Auguste’s condition, as we watch Auguste at home and at his daycare with his teacher, Annie Laroche. (Credit: Marie-France Coallier, Montreal Gazette).
