Child at Massachusetts daycare diagnosed with typhoid fever

(HE) NEW TONIGHT.

A MASSACHUSETTS DAY CARE IS CLOSED AFTER A TODDLER IS DIAGNOSED WITH TYPHOID FEVER.

(MM) RIGHT NOW.

CHILDREN AND STAFF ARE GETTING TESTED FOR THE POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING DISEASE.

(HE) EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER CAROLINE GOGGIN IS LIVE IN THE NEWSROOM WITH MORE INFORMATION.

(CG) THE PRIVATE DAYCARE SAYS IT WAS CLOSED YESTERDAY AND TODAY — NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE CONCERNED THE INFECTION WOULD SPREAD — BUT BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T STAFF IT.

AS MANY TEACHERS ARE NOW WAITING FOR TEST RESULTS.

"It's my daughter's classroom, toddler 1.

" HALA ABDEL-BAKY — AND HER DAUGHTER JENNA — PAID A VISIT TO THE QUINCY HEALTH DEPARTMENT THURSDAY.

JENNA WAS BEING TESTED FOR TYPHOID FEVER.

"I was definitely concerned and I was like okay.

" THE 19 MONTH OLD GOES TO BRIGHT HORIZONS IN NORTH QUINCY.

THE PRIVATE DAYCARE WAS SHUTTERED EARLIER THIS WEEK — AFTER STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS SAID A LITTLE BOY HAD CONTRACTED TYPHOID.

"They sent emails and told us they're doing like deep cleaning and stuff like that.

" THE CDC SAYS TYPHOID IS CAUSED BY A SALMONELLA BACTERIA.

AND IS SPREAD THROUGH CONTAMINATED FOOD OR WATER.

SYMTPOMS VARY — BUT INCLUDE.

FEVER, FATIGUE, WEAKNESS, STOMACH PAINS, HEADACHE, AND RASH.

THE DAYCARE SAYS THE BOY HAD RECENTLY TRAVELED OVERSEAS — AND THAT'S WHERE HE CONTRACTED THE INFECTION.

NOW ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF ARE BEING TESTED.

TO MAKE SURE THEY WEREN'T EXPOSED TO THE SOMETIMES DEADLY DISEASE.

"I don't know what to expect! I just want to make sure she's okay.

" (CG) THERE'S NO WORD YET ON IF ANY STUDENTS OR STAFF WERE INFECTED.

THE DAYCARE SAYS IT'S BEEN THOROUGHLY CLEANED — AND IT HOPES TO REOPEN SOON.
