The House Select Committee on Discipline met for the first time in Chicago on June 27th to begin the process of hearing evidence and making the determination whether or not to recommend punishment for Rep. Derrick Smith (D-Chicago) to the full House. Smith is alleged to have taken a cash bribe in exchange for providing a letter of support on behalf of a daycare center seeking a state grant. The House Special Investigative Committee previously found reasonable grounds to charge Smith for abusing the power of his office.
The Republican House Manager, State Representative Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs), opened the hearing by reading the charges against Smith. State Representative Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) who sits on the committee offered a statement in regards to how the committee will conduct the hearing.
